Bad News! I got a last-minute Hail Mary at my job so I no longer have nearly enough time to work on that bustle dress! Oh no! More on that when I figure out what I am going to do!

No rest for the Wicked

While I wait for the camera to show up, I am getting started on the next project. We have a bustle picnic in Fremont on the 23rd of June. I'll be gone from the 9th-the 19th in Alaska so that gives me roughly a week and a half to make something.

I would normally just trim out a dress that I already have an call it good, except that the two bustle dresses that I have are currently silk and poly, and a lunchtime picnic in Fremont in June sounds like a hot affair. So basically, I either will suffer or I will make something in a week and a half.

Fortunately, my last day at my job is tomorrow, so the majority of that is going to be work-free days and I can sew most of the day. I do appear to be booked up most evenings next week and a lot this weekend. Ugh.

So, I will try and use patterns that I know really well and fit, so I can cut right to the chase. It probably won't be finished by the picnic, but it will be wearable! I don't know what I will have for accessories either, but I'll see what I can do!

Here's the fabric that I have. It's only 8 yards so it will be the jacket and the apron and I'll probably make a white skirt to go with this. It should be pretty adorbs though, if I do say so myself!

Camera Woes and a Few More Pictures

So, evidently, even though I was the master packer and went around and packed everything up all neatly on Saturday night after the ball, I missed one thing: my camera.  Yeah, so that got left in LA.  Fortunately, the Double Tree is sending that to me, but it means a few more days without pictures from the event. My pal Becky was there with her awesome husband, Craig, and she sent me some of the pictures that she took though so I do have a few to share that they took (click to embiggen them):

Back from the ball

I'll try and upload the pics I took tonight soon! I only got a couple with my phone, but here's something to preview:

Finish line... crossed!

I'm done. Well... I'm done with all the stuff that is "must have to be able to be seen in public".  I can now do all the "nice to have" stuff, like making a modesty placket for the back of my corset so I don't have corset-back-butt in full view all night. (Ladies, even skinny chicks get this. Consider it a public service to make a modesty placket if you have time.)

Oh, and I discovered another configuration - the over-under:

I kind of like it!

So, anyway, I finally bit the bullet and attached the wings. Wanna know which way I chose???

ALL OF THEM.

My husband was standing there on Monday saying "too bad you can't make it so it's reversible...", to which I replied that that wasn't possible. Then, on Tuesday, as I was driving into work, I thought about it and I said to myself: Wait. It is possible as long as you sew them on along the top and not at all where they overlap just a smidge, you can flip them over and under at will. So I did.

I also did makeup tests with all of my makeup and the other parts that I am planning on using and they seemed to work out ok, so I am running with it.

For people keeping track:

More as I have it - I'm off to make some "nice to have"s and also start getting things in one place so they are ready to go and I don't forget anything.

Corset is finished! Now Decisions!

The corset is bound and feathers are at the top of it.  Now, I have to decide, by tomorrow (Tuesday) which way I want the wings. One has the bottom frilly parts of the wings on top.  I like this because I spent a LOT of time cutting these out and it seems like a shame to cover them up.  However, this direction is somewhat bust and the colors are the lighter colors of the bottom of the wings, so the green doesn't really match the corset very well (that was made entirely with Wing tops.  It does look pretty awesome though.

And here they are with the tops facing up.  the wings are hung exactly the same way as the other one, they just have the smooth top showing and since they are pretty much a triangle, this part of the wing faces almost straight down.  The color matches the corset better here and this look is much smoother, which I like.

I can't decide! If you have an opinion on which one you like better and read this before Tuesday night, please leave me a comment or send me some sort of ping with which one you prefer!  Thanks!

Weekend Report: Final edition

I think I will do the same as last weekend and just update this post as I am going along.

2:00 am Sunday night
Got more binding done after the movie and also some small hand work that needed to be done on the skirt. Anyway, more progress!

9:00 Sunday
We are about to go out to the movies, but I did get all the petticoats onto the skirt. YAY!

6:00 Sunday
Things are moving along.  I have the skirt done.  I was sad that I put that much effort into a really nice piece and it will never actually be seen in public.  Ah well. I took some pics so you can see it in it's natural form.

Look! It has pockets:

Here's a shot of the inside for people wanting to know.  Yes, french seams, even on the pockets:

I am currently in the throws of franken-ing the petticoats on and it is a nightmare,so i need to take breaks to keep my sanity.  We are going to go to a movie tonight so I doubt I will get to wings tonight, but soon!! More later tonight when I know where I land.

1:30 AM Saturday night/Sunday Morning
Ok, so I have the skirt flat-lined and I would say 80% sewn together. I have 2 side seams, the waistband and the hem to do and that is it. Then I can attach the petticoats to it. I sure hope this all works. More tomorrow.

6:00 Saturday:
So far, I have axed the fabric that I thought I would make the skirt out of because it is too flimsy to hold the weight of what I am about to put on it.  Instead, I searched my stash for some silk and Viola! I found this PERFECT color green Dupioni that I had bought forever ago. (It's the green one in the shot below - I know, it looks crazy green, but actually, it matches the wing green really well)

So, I now have that all pressed (it was 10 yards in a ball) and cut out.  I also have some really nice quality cotton muslin that is super strong so I am going to flat line the skirt with that to add strength. I had to iron that all out and prep it as well. It probably doesn't really need it, but better to be safe than sorry!''m going to move on to flat lining the fabric now...

The corset is 1/2 way through the binding process and I am just waiting for my finger to stop throbbing every time I touch something to finish it.  I hope to get that done tonight.

I will keep this list updated as I go:
  • Cut corset - DONE
  • Sew base corset - DONE
  • Set in boning channels - DONE
  • Grommet corset - DONE
  • Drape wings on corset - DONE
  • Sew in draping - DONE
  • Bind corset - in progress - 75% done
  • Interface wings - DONE
  • Cut out wings - DONE
  • Fray check wings - DONE
  • Spray wings with adhesive glue - DONE
  • Make wings double-sided - DONE
  • Dye petticoats - DONE
  • Cut out underskirt - DONE
  • Flat-line underskirt - DONE
  • Sew under skirt - DONE
  • Franken petticoats onto skirt - DONE
  • Attach wings to skirt
  • Wig - New Wigs have arrived!  I like them both and consider them good enough to wear.  I may add some stuff to it, but I consider that a "good to have" project or maybe for next wearing. - DONE
  • Figure out makeup - New Makeup is here and I will do a test shortly
You know, people gave me a hard time when I was saying that this would take the full 2.5 months that I had to make it, but it is actually pretty much right on schedule.  Yes, I could have made it faster if I worked on it more in the evenings or cancelled plans and vacations.  And yes, i could have made it faster if I took shortcuts and didn't do finishing or double side the wings, but that isn't my style. I am slow, but I think this thing will hold up really well, and I will be proud of it.

I do have a "nice to have" list for add-ons to this dress.  Some of them may happen now, and some of them may be a next time, we'll see. Sahrye is adding lights to hers, so that would be nice.  I would like to sew antennae into the wig, I'd like to add some sparkle to the wings somehow, stuff like that. I don't need any of that to happen to be happy with it for this wearing though so I'm not even considering any of it until after the skirt is constructed and I have a chance to look at it as a whole.

I'll post more when I have stuff done...

Draping is sewn down and stress-tested

I learned the hard way to throw it on the dress form an cinch it up to make sure all of your stitches won't pop out! :-)

Now onto binding. Man I haven't hand-sewn in a while. My index finger lost it's callus and I'm really feeling it!

    Draping on Brünnhilde

Here's a shot if the draping about 40% sewn down and on Brünnhilde, for effect!

    Proof!

I was told "pics or it didn't happen", so here's a "some sewn down, some not sewn down" shot for ya. Once it actually looks like anything but a mess if fabric, I'll post more.

More packages arrived today! I received a wig that I think is WAY better and I am happy with. I don't need to do much styling - I am considering adding a few things here and there, but it good to go if I run out of time.

I also received a ton of new contacts! The orange ones below are totally what I'm going with!

I got the feather trim in the mail and also a bit of makeup so I can do a test this weekend. Ill post pics of that when I try (if it doesn't suck).

    Things are coming along nicely!

    OMG you guys!!

    Yes!!

    Draping is being sewn down.

That's all I have to report, and that will probably be the state of things for a while.

    Updated! Weekend of many tasks!

Update: I am just going to update this post, rather than make a new one as it would be nice just to use the same task list at the bottom of this post.  I will just keep updating this post until the day is over with progress.

    Sunday -
    1. Last set of wings have been sprayed with adhesive.
    2. Wig #1 was styled and tried on.  I totally hate it. I ordered 2 more options that are long in green to see if I can work with those.
    3. All Wings have now been made double sided and trued up.
    4. All 8 wings have been re-fray checked around all the edges just to be sure.
    5. New Makeup and contacts have been ordered to attempt plan B for Make-up.
Saturday - Today was a huge step forward! Here are all the things we got done!
    1. Boning was added to the corset
    2. Wings were draped on the corset - Sahrye did this part for me and pinned it.  Now I have the crazy task of stitching all the darts and folds down. I need matching thread for that though so that has to wait until I can go to Joanne tomorrow.
    3. We did a makeup test, which was an utter fail, but at least now we know.  We have a backup plan and supplies have been ordered to get that accomplished.  I will keep you advised.
    4. My Wig got a haircut, but we are really unsure if we like it or not. I will get some supplies and attempt to style it tomorrow. I have a backup wig/plan If that fails. If both fail, I will go with my natural hair, which is totally fine, but less impactful.
    5. We answered some construction questions and got the rest of the plan put together.
    6. We answered some questions for Sahrye too, wig and corset and have that all settled.
    7. The existing wings were trued up.
    8. The last two sets of wings were interfaced, cut out, and fray checked. Tomorrow I will spray them, bond them together and true them up so we have a total of 8 wings. This should be plenty.
The most important thing that happened is that I am not very sure of everything that I need to do and I am confident that it can all happen. Yay!

     Updated with this weekend's Progress:
    • Cut corset - DONE
    • Sew base corset - DONE
    • Set in boning channels - DONE

Also, I officially have 2 weeks left to get this thing done! *gulp* Then I get to start thinking about Dragon*Con and what I want to do for that.  I have an idea, but I am unsure if it is technically possible in the time allowed.

Oh yeah, and then there's the Ardenwoon Bustle Picnic to consider, which hapens just 2 days after I get back from a 10 day cruise to Alaska.  I wonder if they will let me bring a sewing machine on a cruise ship?

    Form of: dress form!

Brünnhilde has been recovered from the garage and had been made ready to help me drape this thing!

    Corset structure finished!

Ok, so the corset has 1 million boning channels, has been attached to the back pieces and has also had the lining attached. I need to tack down the lining in a few places because I hate weird bubbly insides, but pretty much, the corset is functional as a support garment. At this point, I can put the boning in and start draping the fabric. I have to do this in a lot of little parts as I am using wing fragments, but I have a plan. I am hoping to execute this plan this weekend - I will keep you updated!

Saturday will be a busy day for the dress and the wig both as Sahrye is coming over to hash things out and do a make-up test and my friends who is a hair stylist is going to come over and cut my wig bangs, which are currently ridiculous. Then it will be on to skirt construction!

Oh, I also got the most redonculant shoes ever, which I can barely stand in, but I think I can make it through the photos shoot in.  I will most likely wear them only for that, and then switch to ballet flats for the party. I feel like a hoochie in these shoes, but they certainly go with the dress! Here's what those look like:

Below is where things stand as of right now:
    • Cut corset - DONE
    • Sew base corset - DONE
    • Set in boning channels - DONE
    • Grommet corset - DONE
    • Drape wings on corset
    • Bind corset
    • Interface wings - 3/4 done (This is as far as I can go until the Corset is done)
