SATURDAY: Status Update - Week of 7/30

Rather that repeat the list every day, I am going to just post it once a week and then update the post with info each day of the week.  I will update the title of the post, which should keep your RSS readers interested (let me know if that isn't working for you). I'll also post a short summary in reverse chronological and the list will stay at the bottom.  Sound good?

Saturday:
The hat is together all the way, has all of the pleating sewn down on the under-brim and the bias binding is 1/2 way on! Not much sewing is happening at CoCo, as predicted, but at least the hat is coming along!

Thursday:
Well, I got to Costume College and despite the fact that I didn't think anything would get done, I did actually at least pin in the under-brim fabric on my hat, which I am currently totally loosing my brain over.  I sure hope that it still looks this good when I have it sewn down! In my head, it's super awesome, even thought you mostly won't see it. Check it out:

Wednesday:
And we have a fully formed lining! Proof:
Things will probably slow down on this for the weekend as I will be at Costume College (AKA Summer Camp for Costume nerds). I'm going to bring some stuff with me to work on, but I do not hold out a ton of hope that things will get done as I have a pretty full schedule and lots of friends to keep me busy. :-) This is ok - it was built into the plan from the beginning.

Tuesday:
Tonight I put the crown and top brim fabric on my hat, all of which had to be hand-sewn down, and then I flat-lined my jacket fabric.  Doesn't seem like a lot, but it took 3 1/2 hours.  I can't figure out if I am super slow or what, but it seems to take me a lot longer than everyone else to do everything...

Monday:
Today was big jacket fabric cutting day.  I got the fashion fabric, the lining and the interlining all cut out and ready to go.

I also got the top piece sewn onto my hat.  I'm not totally sure what the deal is with me working on the hat all the time, but I guess I am sick of always having the dress, but never the hat to go with.

This picture makes me a little sad and a little happy cuz it's from Other Noelle's pin stash.  I'm sad that she is very far away right now, but It's nice to know I have a little piece of her here to help me with this project.

UPDATED on Sunday:Put her in the Iron Maiden!

Lots of fabric woes (which i will relay at some future point) later, I have finally acquired the fabric I want/need for this Iron Man Bustle Dress.  There's an image in my brain of it, so I know where I am going, it's just the "how will I get there?" part that I need to solve.

I have decided for now not to think about too much and just get started on as much as I can and see what happens, so here we go.

I am going to use the patented "breakdown the job into tiny pieces" method again so I don't freak out when i think about all the work that needs to get done. The current list looks like this (I am sure it will change):

UPDATE Saturday/Sunday: I marked the items I got done this weekend (along with a bunch of running around town gathering supplies and doing research). Also, some new line items were added to help break things down more. It doesn't look like a lot, but I actually feel like I have gotten quite a bit done, so I guess that is good news! Evidently, I got a little obsessed with the hat, which normally wouldn't have been what I tackled first, but since it was on my mind, I went for it.

That's pretty much what I can see right now as the plan.  I have 33 days before I am on a plane to ATL, where this needs to be as done as possible. Other than Costume College, I have all of my weekends mostly set aside for this through August, so I think I have a solid chance of making it happen.

You will likely see updates pretty constantly through then if i am correct, so stay tuned and wish me luck!

For the "pics or it didn't happen" crowd, here is my hat, cut, wired and mulled, in two pieces, waiting to be covered:

This is what it looks like when you try and dye 28 yards of fabric all at once

So that's all done and washing now to get the excess dye out. I feel like I just cleaned up after the red wedding...

BTW...

Feeling sad that you did not go to SDCC?

Don't.

You can watch almost every panel on YouTube. Search for SDCC 2013 Full Panel (add in your show of choice if you like). I have watched almost every panel that I missed and wanted to see already, and I didn't have to wait in any lines.

ALSO, check out the Nerd HQ conversations (hour long off-site panels with one or two actors at a time) that are AWESOME. They hold these panels for super cheap if you are there, simulcast them live and leave the videos up forever for free, throw giant parties at petco stadium and invite all of con, and every dollar they get goes to the charity Operation smile. Cuz Zachary Levi is one of the awesomest people ever. Kick them a couple bucks for operation smile if you love them enough...

You're welcome! :-)

Really Incredible SDCC Cosplay Video

You know, this video is really really great, if you are interested in the cosplay at SDCC. It shows off some REALLY brilliant work all over the con. I saw a lot of these folks and their costumes were amazeballs!

Butterfly pro pics

BTW, I got the pro pics back from Myth Masque.  I am kind of bummed that my wings are laying super funny weird, but whatever, and I will get some better pics at CoCo, cuz Sahrye and I are going to wear them again there.  Anyway, here's what they look like!

SDCC Cosplay Catch-up

Man, I was not good about posting pics every day of SDCC! I was super exhausted though and it was all I could do just to get them up on Flickr. That place is madness, I tell you!

Anyway, here's some Cosplay that I particularly loved - hope you enjoy!:

San Diego Comic Con Cosplay update #SDCC

Hi folks! I'm at SDCC for the next few day.  I will be wandering around, and in panels, but I take pics of cosplayers here and there so I'll post some of the cutest ones of the day each day for you.  You can always check the full set here, which will be updated daily.

Here's today's favorites (preview night so not a ton of costumes):

I have Fabric Woes

Which I will share after the situation is fully resolved. Rest aired, I'm not sewing right now, but now because I don't want to...

Sigh.

Warning: It's Beginning

Fabric has been ordered and is currently en rout, the long way around the world, to me from India. Don't get too excited, it's just silk taffeta.

I have settled on what I will attempt for Dragon*Con and this photo shoot I have with Anna Fischer:

I think I will marry my love of bustle dresses with what she does - straight cosplay - and attempt an Iron Man bustle dress. I have dubbed this project, aptly, "The Iron Maiden".

"What does that look like?" You ask. Well, if I had any skill at all at drawing, I would show you, but I don't, so for now it is in my head. For what it is worth, it's pretty awesome in my head...

I'm not actually sure that I can even do it, given that I'm not adept at changing patterns yet, and there's a lot if that happening here, but I kind if have a plan. I need to outline all my steps, like I did last time, as that seemed to work well, and I need to do some test runs on some ideas I have while I wait for fabric.

I sure hope this works out. You can expect posts to start flowing soon, and quite possibly a postmortem if I fail out; failure, as Adam Savage says, is always an option! Hopefully I will have at least some success! Wish me luck!
